Praise for Curtis L. DeBerg’s

WRESTLING
WITH DEMONS

“DeBerg reimagines the past, bringing it into the present, to gain new insights. It's a fresh, new approach to understanding Hemingway. Amazing!”

— Christine Whitehead, author, Hemingway’s Daughter

  • “All things Hemingway have been examined from all imaginable angles, but leave it to Dr. Curtis DeBerg to find a new and creative approach. This lengthy examination touches on the established milestones of the Hemingway biography, but then imaginatively takes Hemingway into a new time and space for a modern conversation.”

  • "I really like the MDH (i.e., Hemingway's ghost) and CD (Curt DeBerg) dialogues: they communicate information that in this way is much easier to retain than the dry, scholarly works. DeBerg has read an enormous amount and conveyed it with concision."

    — Anton Baer, Academic Editor, Ryde, England, United Kingdom

  • “Wonderful, thoughtful material, quotations, interviews. DeBerg really did his homework in providing valuable, new information; and his evidence and questions about Hemingway's war experience will be good for the Hemingway world to grapple with.”

    — Rev. Dr. W. Wayne Fraser, retired English professor from Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada

  • "DeBerg has something here that fills a previously empty niche. At times, it feels like employing stream-of-consciousness; flowing between real-world observations, political opinion, personal confessional, and Hemingway scholarship...”

—Rick Reisinger, a doctoral student in English at the University of South Florida

Here’s some reviewer feedback:

  • DeBerg does not just repeat the viewpoint that Hemingway's experiences in World War I were the major influence in his life. Instead, he provides a detailed study of his many experiences and relationships, labelling them demons, that affected him all his life. The author traveled in the footsteps of Hemingway's life to investigate those demons: his parents, chronic pain from his many injuries, remorse over his betrayal of his four wives, plus ongoing fear and anguish. As he travels, DeBerg makes comparisons between his own life and Hemingway's.

  • DeBerg’s Wrestling with Demons: In Search of the Real Ernest Hemingway, is appropriately titled. Beset by physical injuries, depression, heavy drinking, war memories, and a non-stop wanderlust for women not currently in his orbit, Hemingway’s largesse in booze, wives, travel, and his obsession with guns does not mitigate his life’s burdens. Like his father before him, Hemingway was tortured by an overbearing mother he grew to loathe for the rest of his life.

  • The author has included many authentic pictures of the places and people in his subject's life. The story is told in different formats. From historical fiction to his dialogue with MDA, as he calls the ghost of Hemingway, he imagines traveling with him. The reader can easily imagine taking the trip with them. He concludes with the hope that his book will encourage readers to find out more about Hemingway.

  • The author retraces the famous author’s ceaseless wanderings to Havana, Paris, Spain, and his Oak Park, Illinois birthplace. Like his hero Hemingway, author DeBerg is a survivor of plane crashes, incurring painful injuries that linger for a lifetime.

  • This book was such a wonderfully informative and enjoyable read I didn't want it to end. And it was hard to put down!! I feel like DeBerg is very knowledgeable regarding all things Hemingway and as an author that does have so much knowledge about the subject, the book was absolutely amazing.
